In one of his final films, The Last Poker Game, Martin played an elderly Casanova and took part in his first sex scenes with his movie wife Ann Marie Shea and a volunteer at his character's nursing home, played by Pamela Dubin.

He won an Oscar for his critically-acclaimed role as Bela Lugosi in the movie, "Ed Wood", as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Golden Globe Award and a Saturn Award for the role. "Nobody knew me", he said later.

Martin won the Academy Award back in 1994 for his work as Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood. The Academy recognized his layered performance with a nomination, as did Woody Allen, who quickly cast him in another Oscar-nominated role, as an amoral ophthalmologist in 1989's Crimes and Misdemeanors. Landau also played roles in such movies as "Cleopatra", "The Greatest Story Ever Told", "The Hallelujah Trail", "Nevada Smith" and "They Call Me Mr. Tibbs".

Landau's Oscar and Golden Globe wins in 1995 temporarily boosted his career. Landau subsequently collaborated with Burton twice more, in 2009's Sleepy Hollow and as a voice actor for the director's 2012 animated feature Frankenweenie.

Landau had been doing television work since the 1950s but got busy in TV in the mid-1960s, with several guest appearances on "The Outer Limits" and "The Man From U.N.C.L.E".
