Egypt attacks: Two German female tourists, five policemen killed

A man armed with a knife killed two Ukrainian tourists Friday and wounded four other foreign holidaymakers, all women, at Hurghada resort, in the Red Sea, few hours after gunmen killed five security forces in their vehicle early in the morning, South of Cairo.

The women were among six female tourists attacked Friday by an assailant with a knife in a beach resort area of the town, Egypt's Interior Ministry said. An Egyptian security official also confirmed three victims were from Serbia and one was from Poland and the Czech Foreign Ministry tweeted one of those hurt is a 36-year-old Czech woman.

"Sadly we now have certainty that two German tourists were killed in the attack in Hurghada", a press officer for the German Foreign Ministry told CNN. The motive for the attack is not yet known.

One local Cafe owner, whose livelihood is dependent on tourist footfall said on a personal level, he believes the attack was the work of a "lone-wolf", and that he believes the perpetrator was "troubled or had some issues in his life".

Google Maps now showing travel time graph to destinations over the day
Google has incorporated a new feature to Google Maps which will tell users the best time to leave for a destination. The new feature will show a graph of the expected, and current actual travel time to any searched destination.

"It has not been proven to the prosecution if it was an isolated attack or a criminal or terrorist incident", the Security Prosecution said in a statement.

Friday's attacks are likely to further impact Egypt's deeply struggling tourism industry - a pillar of the country's economy that employs millions of people.

Four other tourists were injured in the attack, Egyptian state-run news agency Al-Ahram reported. The violence has been concentrated in the northern Sinai Peninsula, but attacks have spread to the mainland, including the capital. Previous year in January, two assailants armed with a gun, a knife and a suicide belt landed on the beach of a hotel in Hurghada, wounding two foreign tourists. They were only lightly wounded.
