Governors split on Senate's new health care bill

Twenty governors from across the country, including Governor Malloy, are coming together for the National Governors Association summer meeting taking place in Providence.

Health care, as it did at the winter meetings of the NGA in Washington, D.C., will take on a higher profile as the conference gains steam this weekend.

Pence is introducing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and says the Trump administration is looking forward to renegotiating NAFTA in a way that will equally benefit the USA and Canada. "For a state like me and MA that means I want to protect the waiver and I want to protect our current relationship financially and programmatically with the feds".

"Let me be clear: President Trump and I believe the Senate healthcare bill strengthens and secures Medicaid for the neediest in our society", Pence said.

Under the expansion, 400,000 Kentucky residents gained medical coverage, helping the state's uninsured rate fall from 20 percent to 7.5 percent in just two years. Dayton says Minnesota has a five-year plan to manage, control, and protect state computer data systems. We have about 100,000 Rhode Islanders who now have health care because of the Affordable Care Act, and they'll nearly certainly lose their coverage.

Numerous fundamentals of the bill, however, remained unchanged, including an $800 billion cut over 10 years to Medicaid under a new system that would put a per-capita cap on reimbursements to states.

"I am struggling to validate the numbers that are being presented to me by the administration, versus what I'm hearing from independent (experts), what I'll likely hear from the (Congressional Budget Office), what I'm hearing from back home", Sandoval said after the governors-only meeting. One of the hot topics of discussion among the chief executives is proposed changes to the nation's health care system.

Several Democratic governors said earlier Friday that they oppose the bill. I think it's immoral.

So what are other governors saying about this new Senate bill?

"They're trying to buy people off with hoped for promises of money in the future".

Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval of Nevada, one of the states that expanded its Medicaid program, said he's already told Pence that he's concerned about protecting people newly eligible for Medicaid.

USA governors meeting in Rhode Island say they're frustrated more progress hasn't been made in combatting the opioid overdose epidemic and they share a sense of urgency in addressing it.

Baker was tapped in March by President Donald Trump to sit on a new White House opioid commission led by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. The hire, which Bloomberg and NBC confirmed through anonymous White House officials, comes after news broke that the President's son held a meeting with a Kremlin-linked attorney on the premises that he would receive damaging information about Hillary Clinton from the Russian government. "So while it will be very, very hard to go through the transition, the federal government down to the states, there can some very positive advantages if we work through it". But then Trump reversed course and said he would seek a better deal first.

Governors say a mix of different approaches are needed to improve the situation, including a more aggressive stance on prescription drugs.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said a greater emphasis on treatment is also needed.
