Hammond Rules Out Single Market Membership In Temporary Brexit Deal

Chancellor Philip Hammond

Appearing on BBC1's The Andrew Marr Show, Mr Hammond blamed cabinet leaks on colleagues opposed to his agenda for an extended transitional period after Britain formally left the European Union in 2019 so that business was not faced with a "cliff-edge" break.

The lead story in the Times cited five separate unidentified sources as saying Hammond had described public-sector workers as "overpaid" during the cabinet meeting last week and was criticized by Johnson for the statement.

As well as the leaks from Cabinet, a newspaper suggested that Hammond said technology made driving a train so easy that "even" a woman could do it.

Pressed by Andrew Marr on whether he said they were overpaid, Mr Hammond said: "Well I've told you, I'm not going to talk about what comes out of a private Cabinet meeting".

Mr Hammond has irked some hardline Brexiteers in the Cabinet, including Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, by arguing for a deal which prioritises jobs and economic growth over controlling immigration.

Answering his critics, the chancellor urged his colleagues to focus "on the job in hand".

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau meets Syrian baby boy named after him
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday met a baby of Syrian refugees who was named after him as an honour. The family took refugee in Canada on February past year and their baby was born in Alberta, after few months.

But Trade secretary Liam Fox refused to be drawn on Hammond's view on it being in the years, shortly after.

Hammond is a leading advocate in U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May's cabinet for a so-called soft Brexit, in contrast to campaigners for a clean break such as Fox. "It has a timetable to it and you can't afford for that timetable to be broken into by a Conservative leadership election, so we have to get through that first and foremost". I think the public expect us to be disciplined and effective and the only people smiling at this are in Brussels and Paris'.

Iain Duncan Smith, former Tory leader, said he was dismayed at the leadership speculation in the Sunday papers, telling some of his colleagues: "Just for once, shut up for God's sake".

He told the Marr programme: 'The honest truth about all this.there's a big divide in the Conservative party at the moment on another level and it's between some of them in the Cabinet, it appears and the rest of the backbenchers because it's quite interesting that a lot of the new gen and everything else come in are absolutely seethingly furious about what this is rep at the moment.

Ministers had been discussing the cap on public sector pay increases. He said they had been taken "out of context". One can only wonder what excuse is he going to give when presented with the EU Brexit payment, a figure bandied at anything upwards of some £75 Billion, and more importantly how we are actually going to pay the bill.yet another round of austerity cuts? "He did not say that public sector workers were overpaid".
