Iraqi Military Forces Parade Through Baghdad To Celebrate Mosul Liberation

After eight months of hard urban warfare, Iraqi military forces on June 29 captured the Mosul mosque at the heart of the strategic northern city, where Daesh had declared its de facto capital.

Baghdad - Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi on Saturday attended a massive military parade in Baghdad celebrating the victory announced against the terror group ISIS in Mosul.

The city of Mosul was the main stronghold of the IS, since the group occupied it in June 2014, until its expulsion in July by joint Iraqi forces, in an offensive that began in October 2016. Meanwhile, an Iraqi intelligence officer said on July 16 that ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was still alive.

Reuters video showed soldiers marching with tanks and other military equipment through the streets of the capital with Abadi watching.

Iraqi counter-terrorism units detained twenty female Islamic State members from a tunnel discovered under a Mosul Old City neighbourhood, days after the recapture of the city. The group of women, who were arrested on July 13, included five citizens of Germany, three citizens of Russian Federation, three citizens of Turkey, two citizens of Canada, one Chechn and six from Libya and Syria, according to al-Araji. The mosque was destroyed by IS fighters as USA -backed Iraqi troops closed in on their positions in June. USA officials, however, said they don't have any proof confirming the ISIL leader's death. Backed by the USA -led global coalition, Iraq last October launched a wide-scale military offensive to recapture Mosul and the surrounding areas, with various Iraqi military, police and paramilitary forces taking part in the operation.

No plans to block Telegram, says Zahid
Durov said Telegram blocks thousands of ISIL-related channels a month and is "always open to ideas on how to get better at this". The Ministry of Communication and IT blocked Telegram's web version on Friday and threatened to stop access to its app as well.
