London Gatwick airport runway briefly closed after plane's tyre burst - spokesman

Air Canada plane stuck at Gatwick

All flights have been re-routed to the airport's backup runway, setting of delays and cancellations for some travellers.

In the latest update the airport spokeswoman said: "Flights at Gatwick are severely disrupted following an incident involving an Air Canada Rouge flight to Toronto, which returned safely to Gatwick after experiencing a burst tyre on take-off".

"Passengers should check with their airline before travelling to the airport for information about their specific flight".

The Tornto-Bound Boeing 767 circled the south coast to burn off and dump fuel before returning to the ground.

All inbound and outbound flights have since been halted for more than an hour with inspectons still taking place on the runway.

A flight from London to Toronto carrying 282 passengers has been forced to turn back after one of its tires burst as it took off.

The runway is now being inspected to make sure any debris is cleared.

"We apologise as some flights will be delayed as a result and a few arriving flights are likely to be diverted to other airports".
