Najib: Malaysia condemns Israel's closure of Al-Aqsa Mosque

Police surround body of terrorist on Temple Mount

Israeli police said they had no comment.

Ten seconds of security camera footage released by police appeared to show two of the attackers running toward two policemen stationed in a stone passageway and shooting one of them in the back.

Several knives were reportedly discovered at the compound when it was searched by the security forces over the weekend.

The assailants were killed at the site known to Muslims as the Haram al-Sharif and to Jews as the Temple Mount, the scene of regular clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police, but where gunfire rarely occurs. It said Waqf staff wouldn't be returning to the compound as well, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Despite continuing objections from the Wakf's imams (clerics) over the security measures, Monday's visitors to the site ascended the Temple Mount without any problems.

"We reject the changes imposed by the Israeli government..."

The police said they plan to gradually open additional gates, after installing metal detectors.

Sheikh Ikrima Sabri, the former grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestinian territories, said on Saturday that the closure was a "collective punishment" that affected thousands of worshippers, adds Al-Jazeera.

"We can not allow for agents of murder, who desecrate the name of God, to drag us into a bloody war, and we will deal with a heavy hand against all the arms of terror, and its perpetrators", Israeli President Reuven Rivlin said in a statement.

In a statement on Sunday, Hamas called on Palestinians to intensify protests in response to the Israeli crimes against the people and Al-Aqsa Mosque, according to the Palestinian Information Center.

The incident occurred near the Temple mount.

Some women wailed and cried while telling people not to enter.

One Palestinian was lightly wounded in the shooting.

In a condolence statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, "This is a sad day for our brothers in the Druze community who are paying the heaviest price in our shared duty to defend the security of Israel".
