Newgarden wins second Honda Indy Toronto

Bourdais serving as mentor during Honda Indy Toronto, months after crash

Josef Newgarden had some fun at hometown star James Hinchcliffe's expense in the Honda Indy Toronto.

This weekend, the Verizon IndyCar Series heads to Toronto to race in the 12th of 17 events (Honda Indy Toronto, Sunday, 3 p.m. ET, CNBC).

"I love Hinch. He's a great representative, but this is so good", Newgarden said.

"Honestly, I think on used tires, it's probably the best lap I've ever put together to put us P2", Rahal said. "The days that it goes your way and you end up lucky, you just take 'em. I would be remiss to not mention that both these podiums really came as a result of strategy going our way and yellow flags falling our way".

It's the fifth career win for Newgarden and his second victory this season after finishing first in the Grand Prix of Alabama in April.

Taking over the lead, Newgarden was able to keep a consistent gap to those chasing him for the remainder of the race, and finished 1.8 seconds clear of Rossi. Will Power grabbed the one-lap qualifying record (2016, 107.564 mph) and race record (2016, 85-laps, 88.739 mph), while winning both the Pole and Race previous year. On that last stint we were even kind of hunting down Josef and Alex a little bit. He dropped nearly a lap down and spent the race trying to make up the gap. There have been nine different winners in the 11 previous Verizon IndyCar races held this season...19 of the 21 drivers entered at Toronto have raced in Indy cars here before...

7 million Venezuelans vote to reject Maduro - opposition
Various former Latin American heads of state attended Sunday's vote as observers in support of the opposition. Academics monitoring the vote said that 7,186,170 people took part in the non-binding referendum.

Fans still packed the grandstands regardless of the potential inclement weather and stood along the fence to catch a glimpse as the cars whizzed by. "But the engineers know how to work and I'm confident we're going to roll off with a decent auto". "We stayed quite a bit later and just really analyzed everything that we could, and made some pretty solid changes overnight that suited me really well on Saturday (for qualifying)".

Power, starting in fourth, hit New Zealander Scott Dixon's rear at the third corner of Sunday's race, causing him to bounce into the wall. The steering on Power's vehicle was broken, meaning he had to be pushed into pit lane. Series' rookie Ed Jones has raced here in Indy Lights before, while the other series' rookie, Esteban Gutierrez, is coming off a strong oval track race (his first) at Iowa last week.

Detroit double victor Graham Rahal was second in street course points this year, and probably would have been first had he not been caught out by the yellow in Toronto that jumbled the order.

IndyCar series leader Scott Dixon enjoyed an encouraging day's practice at the Toronto street race round, clocking the third-quickest time.

Bourdais is in Toronto this weekend to help out his Dale Coyne Racing team and is in good spirits, all the more fantastic considering the impact sustained when he lost control of the vehicle during Indy 500 qualifying.

Gutierrez says he is getting more comfortable in the Coyne auto.
