Operation underway to re-capture Helmand 's Nawa district in Afghanistan

The U.N. says that represents a 2 percent rise from the same period the previous year.

The report confirmed that a massive truck bomb in the center of Kabul on May 31, which killed at least 90 people, was the deadliest attack since the USA -led invasion that toppled the Taliban in 2001. Embedding more advisers closer to the front lines has proven effective and facilitated more airpower to fledgling Afghan forces, Nicholson explained to lawmakers earlier this year.

"The goal of this operation was to clear the Nawa district from the enemies, from the Taliban", said Col. Zahirgul Moqbal, the commanding officer of the Afghan Border Police.

"The air support provided by the coalition forces increased the morale amongst the Afghan Uniform Police personnel", said Lt. Col. Mohammad Omar, the acting operations officer with the 505th Zone National Police. He did not provide any figures and there was no way to verify his claims.

The move ended Taliban's almost one year occupation of the district, according to the ministry.

At least 8 killed in blast at mosque in northeastern Nigeria
The bomb later exploded killing Gambo Bukar, while his friend, Umar Bukar sustained injuries and was hospitalized. Boko Haram has stepped up attacks since May when 82 Chibok schoolgirls were swapped with Boko Haram commanders.

Afghan forces on Monday recaptured Helmand province's Nawa district from the Taliban after three days of military operations, a Defence Ministry statement said.

In a two-day operation launched on Saturday, the security forces took the district center of Nawa to the south of the provincial capital city of Lashkar Gah, killing more than 50 militants and destroying their vehicles and equipment, Defense Ministry spokesman, General Dawlat Waziri, was cited as saying by Reuters on Monday. There was no immediate comment from the Taliban.

Afghan security forces and volunteers visit the scene of an attack in Lashkar Gah, Helmand Province, on January 10, 2017.

USA and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops are in Helmand to assist Afghan security forces when needed.
