GEORGE Andrew Romero, who became legendary for his modern zombie movies, has died at 77 on Sunday with his family at his side, according to a statement to the Los Angeles Times.

At the time of his death, the acclaimed filmmaker was listening to his favorite score from the film The Quiet Man, and he was surrounded by his family, including his wife, Suzanne Desrocher Romero, and daughter, Tina Romero.

The creator of the classic horror films that satirised society died on Sunday after a brief battle with lung cancer, his manager said. It was recently reported that he was writing and directing George A. Romero Presents: Road of the Dead.

Romero made Night of the Living Dead on a shoestring budget of $114,000.

It was inducted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress of the United States in 1999.
