Yankees notebook: Chapman rebounds, Judge cools

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

He stepped up to the plate with one out and Gary Sanchez on first base.

CC Sabathia allowed two hits over six innings in the opener, and Didi Gregorius hit a solo home run to give NY a 3-0 victory.

Price pitched eight shutout innings with no walks and eight strikeouts, the first time this season that he'd pitched more than seven innings.

Betts' two-out homer in the third inning snapped a stretch of 24 consecutive scoreless innings for Boston. Dustin Pedroia also drove in a run for the Red Sox and tied Nomar Garciaparra for 16th place on Fenway Park's all-time RBIs list with 380.

It was the first time the Yankees have been shut out this year.

Trailing 3-0 (the same score they won by in Game 1) in the top of the eighth, it appeared that Aaron Judge had added to his MLB-leading home run total when he hit a ball 411 feet to center field.

New York Yankees pitcher Aroldis Chapman has been struggling this year, and manager Joe Girardi has a theory as to why it's happening.

"This is a series dominated by pitching (from) both sides", manager John Farrell said.

The team went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position in the afternoon and couldn't get a win for Porcello, who allowed three runs, but only one earned, through six innings.

NY had not won back-to-back games since a season-high, six-game spurt from June 7-12, going 7-19 before winning Saturday and in the first game Sunday.

Boston (52-41) salvaged a split of its four-game series with NY (47-43) after losing earlier Sunday afternoon.

While the Sox have not had a significant problem with runners in scoring position most of this season, wasted scoring opportunities have been a pinstriped boogeyman against NY. The Sox and Yankees split the series, leaving Boston atop the division, with the Rays three games back and NY half a game behind Tampa Bay.

In New York's victory in the opener, the Yankees got a solo homer from Gregorius, a sacrifice fly from Ji-Man Choi and an RBI single from Ronald Torreyes. Adalberto Mejia (4-4) starts for the Twins, against RHP Bryan Mitchell (1-1).
