Turkey marks first anniversary of failed coup

A year after the foiled coup in Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Saturday that he is ready to "chop off the heads" of the coup conspirators, AFP reports.

About 250 people died when coup plotters conducted air strikes against Parliament, the presidential compound and national intelligence and special forces headquarters and tanks rolled onto the streets of Ankara, Istanbul and other major cities.

On Friday Turkish ambassador Elif Ulgen briefed journalists about her country's commemoration today of the failed coup attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's government on 15 July previous year.

Turkey declared the state of emergency on July 20, 2016 and extended it for the fourth time after the coup attempt of July 15, 2016 which Ankara believes was organised by the US-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen.

Many marched to the building clutching a 3 kilometer- (1.86 mile) long flag, the Hurriyet newspaper reported.

It further adds that the Turkish government had earlier dismissed than 100,000 public sector workers and arrested around 50,000 officials of military and police, members from judiciary, education and press.

The structure is situated at a park near the foot of the Bosporus Bridge, which has since been renamed the "Martyr's Bridge" to pay homage to people who were killed there while resisting the coup.
