Todd McFarlane's Spawn reboot finds a home at Blumhouse Productions

Todd McFarlane, creator of the comic-book character Spawn, is partnering via his McFarlane Films banner with Jason Blum's Blumhouse to bring the antihero back to the big screen. That wasn't much to go on, but fans have been anticipating the project knowing that it wouldn't be just another superhero punch-fest, but rather a dark, rated R horror movie.

More below, including videos of McFarlane making the announcement and talking about some other stuff as well. A large portion of his followers will know that he has been campaigning for a Spawn film for years, and from the video, it's clear that he's excited to be a part of it.

Blumhouse Productions is responsible for a stable of popular horror films from the last decade, including Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge, Sinister, Split and Get Out.

McFarlane is writing the script as he has written the first draft of it already.

McFarlane was clearly excited about the announcement, as it's been the culmination of quite a lot of work. "We're going into production", said McFarlane.

UPDATE 5:29pm ET: Various sites, including EW, TheWrap and Deadline, are reporting that McFarlane will indeed write and direct the Spawn movie reboot.

Spawn told of a black ops agent who is betrayed and killed, his soul sent to Hell for all the innocents he had killed.

Spawn, who was known as Al Simmons in his previous life, is a. well, a hellspawn, who is able to return to Earth after death thanks to a deal with an evil creature. The first Spawn film was released in 1997 from director Mark A.Z. Dippé and starred Michael Jai White (Arrow) as the titular character.
