Indian benchmark indices end flat on Thursday despite reaching record intraday highs

Sentiment remained strong following fastchanging developments in Bihar after JD (U) leader Nitish Kumar was sworn as chief minister with BJP's support, signalling stability, traders said.

India's mid-cap stocks fell from a record even as the nation's benchmark equity index gave up gains to close little changed on expiry of monthly derivatives contracts.

The Sensex touched a high of 32,381.36 points and a low of 32,193.63 points in the trade so far. ICICI Bank ended 1% down at 307.05 rupees ahead of its April-June earnings due later Thursday.

Telecom stocks fell broadly, with Idea Cellular, Bharti Airtel and Tata Teleservices losing 2-5 percent. They bought shares worth Rs 1,870 crore in the cash segment, while domestic investors were net sellers to the tune of Rs 660 crore, provisional data by the bourses showed.

The company had posted a net profit of Rs 2,047 crore in the year-ago period, HCL Technologies said in a BSE filing today.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan climbed 0.9 percent to heights not seen since December 2007. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.5 percent to 21,711.01, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.2 percent to 6,422.75.
