Republican plan for quick Obamacare repeal fails in Senate

GOP No more excuses

Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Rob Portman, R-Ohio. It was a first vote of at least two necessary on that plan.

The Senate will return Wednesday morning to continue debates and consideration of amendments to the health care bill, which depending on the final version, could cause 20 to 30 million people over the next decade to lose their insurance.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell speaks to reporters during a news conference on Capitol Hill following a procedural vote on the GOP health care bill on July 25, 2017 in Washington, DC.

Conservatives increasingly appear to be pinning their hopes to option C: so-called "skinny repeal".

These are the Republicans who, given the chance to vote for a clean repeal of Obamacare like they promised, betrayed the American people.

Also still to come is what's known as a "vote-a-rama", in which senators vote on dozens of amendments introduced by both parties, leading up to a final bill.

They say they will vote in favor of it only as a vehicle to open House-Senate negotiations on a more comprehensive bill. "Ultimately, we want to get legislation to finally end the failed Obamacare status quo through Congress and to the presidents desk for his signature", he said. Back in 2008, before the ACA went into effect, the uninsured generated $116 billion in health care costs, and paid for just 37 percent of those costs. The Tuesday night tally needed to reach 60 votes to overcome a parliamentary objection.

"I've seen how we've struggled with this", Senator Capito recently said, according to Talking Points Memo. "Obviously, cynically, we can imagine a lot of people act that way but in particular when you know the people it is kind of mind blowing to me that people campaigned to repeal Obamacare and now when they can vote for the exact same repeal they voted for in the past they will not do it because it has real world consequences".

The Kentucky senator argued that even with Obamacare, 27 million Americans can not obtain health insurance and that half of those citizens can not get insured because it remains too expensive.

In total, more than 630,000 Nevadans are on Medicaid.

Murkowski, who is very popular in her home state, with a 59% approval rating and just a 21% disapproval rating, joined Republican Senator Susan Collins from ME in voting against a procedural measure to begin debate on the GOP healthcare bill yesterday. John McCain has delivered an impassioned speech pleading for Republicans and Democrats to work together. Their repeal-only amendment, which failed to pass on Wednesday afternoon, also called for spiking the mandate but would have given lawmakers two years to figure out a replacement plan.

That proposal would significantly gut the Affordable Care Act by repealing its unpopular individual and employer mandates, ending Medicaid expansion and rolling back a slew of the law's taxes, the CNN reported.

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) articulated the line most common among Senate Republicans: Let's pass something - and we can figure out the rest later.
