Uzbekistan: arrest the daughter of a former President

Gulnara Karimova, the once-powerful daughter of late Uzbek ex-President Islam Karimov, has been in detention since a corruption conviction in 2015, officials have confirmed. "She has been taken into custody", the report said.

"A request for the suspension of the investigation has therefore been lodged with the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland", Mangeat said, adding that Uzbek authorities were seriously violating fundamental human rights guarantees.

In Uzbekistan arrested the eldest daughter of the former President of the country Islam Karimov - Gulnara.

Neither Karimova nor her children were present at her father's funeral in September.

The Tashkent regional court found her guilty and handed 5 years in prison.

Karimova, 45, was once a high-profile socialite, fashion designer, pop singer, and Uzbekistan's ambassador to United Nations agencies in Geneva, and was seen as a potential successor to her father.

Moreover, the criminal investigation is ongoing regarding other crimes by Karimova.

In an interview with the BBC in December, her London-based son called on authorities in Uzbekistan to prove that his mother was alive and well.

She is also being investigated on charges of fraud, evading customs and foreign exchange regulations, and money laundering, and is held in custody pending a trial.

Swiss prosecutors reportedly questioned her in Tashkent in December, quashing rumours of her possible death.
