Would you use Samsung Pay on your non-Samsung smartphone?

Earlier this year it was estimated that 34 million people were using Samsung Pay, which is fewer than Apple Pay's 86 million users, but more than Android Pay's 24 million users.

Gadget 360 claims the company is investigating bringing the service to other handsets, based on information from "a source familiar with the developments".

All of Samsung's Galaxy-branded phones that support Samsung Pay come with a special component dedicated to the MST technology. Competing services Android Pay and Apple Pay don't offer a similar functionality, and work only with NFC-enabled terminals. Samsung Pay might simply be made available to flagship devices from the likes of LG, HTC, Google and others.

Hamilton to unleash bid for sixth win to overhaul Vettel
Hamilton, who has won the Hungarian GP five times, needs one more pole position to match Michael Schumacher's all-time record 68. Vettel won in Hungary two years ago and will hope that the trend continues that no driver wins two races in a row this season.

For Samsung Pay to work on other phones the manufacturers would have to build them with magnetic secure transmission (MST) technology, but plenty of phones already have this compatibility. The mobile payment platform is a popular alternative to Android Pay and Apple Pay, but it is now limited to a number of high-end Samsung phones, as well as select lower-range handsets. However, the challenge facing Apple and its rivals is to ensure that the infrastructure is in place for consumers to make in-store payments. A source said that the South Korean phone maker has already held initial talks with manufacturers regarding this option.

Either or both of the strategies could be finalised, the source said. In Australia, you can still only use Samsung Pay with higher end Note, A-series and Galaxy S series handsets as well as their Gear S2 and S3 smartwatches. So far it's been tied to Samsung phones only.

While several premium Samsung phones support the full-fledged Samsung Pay service, some mid-range phones, such as Galaxy J7 Pro and J7 Max that recently launched in India, only support a stripped-down version of the service, called Samsung Pay Mini.
