Transgender Service Members Sue President Trump Over Military Ban

PoliticsLambda Legal and an LGBTQ Military Group Are Suing Trump Over His Transgender Ban Written by Daniel Villarreal

Shannon Minter, legal director of NCLR, said in a statement, "Trump's attempts to reinstate a ban have blindsided thousands of transgender service members who are now scrambling to determine what this means for their families and their futures", adding, "we want to send a message loud and clear that we will aggressively challenge any attempt to harm them".

We've yet to hear about how the administration plans to deal with transgender service members who are actively fighting in combat. The $8.4 million figure is the upper-bound estimate calculated by the RAND Corporation for providing health care to transgender troops each year.

The White House has not conveyed a new policy on transgender service members to the Department of Defense since Trump tweeted that the military "will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity" on July 26, nor has the department promulgated one.

As many as 56 retired generals and admirals came out against the proposed, ban arguing that it would "cause significant disruptions, deprive the military of mission-critical talent, and compromise the integrity of transgender troops who would be forced to live a lie".

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford issued a letter the next day indicating the policy would not be changed until the White House issued further "guidance".

Since Trump's tweets were not technically policy, Zukunft did not openly defy the Commander-in-Chief.

The cost of discharging and replacing the military's estimated 12,800 trans service members is almost 100 times that of trans health care according to the report. But now that the policy is moving forward, it is likely that he may be encouraged to resign.

"We are continuing to monitor the situation for an official policy announcement from the Pentagon", an ACLU spokesperson said.

"There will be no modifications to the current policy until the president's direction has been received by the secretary of defense and the secretary has issued implementation guidance", Dunford reportedly wrote.

"The President's order to remove transgender service members from the United States armed forces is nothing less than a purge". "Separation from the military would have devastating financial and emotional consequences" the lawsuit says of another active duty member of the Air Force who has served for almost 20 years. Since Trump took office in January, the administration has engaged in legal battles over shifts in policy involving immigration and gay rights.

However, they have not yet disclosed when it will be filed or who they are representing.

This is a developing story....
