Disney to remove its films and shows from Netflix

Disney ends distribution deal with Netflix

Following in the footsteps of streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, Disney plans to create original content exclusively for the platform. Soon that won't be an option.

The Walt Disney Company is acquiring majority ownership of direct-to-consumer streaming specialist BAMTech, with plans to introduce new OTT services which will include an exclusive new USA on-demand home for live-action and animated movies from Disney and Pixar. Disney is series about moving into consumer streaming and for that goal it has bought a majority ownership in BAMTech for $1.58 billion. Furthermore, Disney's CEO announced that it plans on launching a special streaming service of its own somewhere around 2018. The service, to be delivered through the ESPN app, will offer baseball, hockey, soccer and tennis matches, as well as college sports. The company announced that it will remove all its movies from Netflix during its latest earnings report.

One of the first streaming services that Disney launches will all about its sports network, ESPN.

To that end, Disney is paying $1.58 billion for majority ownership of BAMTech. The new streaming services are a way to connect directly with consumers and take advantage of new viewing habits.

As for the Star Wars and Marvel lovers out there, additional streaming services for each could also be on the cards in the future. However, the announcement does not include Marvel and Star Wars, two of the company's biggest brand acquisitions in the past decade.

Kenyans election credible, says AU
As many as five people were said to have been shot dead in clashes between the police and slum dwellers. Odinga has called for calm but has also not ruled out calling his supporters to the streets.

Disney's deal with Netflix included pay-TV exclusive rights that started late previous year and gave Netflix first access to films including "Moana" and "Rogue One".

Disney said it would end its distribution agreement with Netflix for subscription streaming of new releases, beginning with the 2019 calendar year theatrical slate.

In addition, the service will contain a library of content from Disney and Pixar, plus shows from Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Disney XD. "Individual sport packages will also be available for purchase, including MLB.TV, NHL.TV and MLS Live".

The development took its toll on Netflix shares, which slid by as much as 4% at one point on Tuesday (8 August) before recovering.
