Japan's Takata files another attempt to stay U.S. air bag lawsuits

Nissan agrees to $98 million settlement for claims on Takata air bag inflators

Without the injunction, Takata said the litigation would distract management from completing the sale of the company´s viable operations to Key Safety Systems for $1.6 billion and could threaten the supply of air bag inflators to replace recalled ones.

Nissan said in a statement that it was not admitting fault under the settlement.

Nissan Motor Co. and its US unit will pay nearly USD98 million to settle economic-loss claims tied to Takata Corp. air bag recalls.

The Nissan agreement follows a $533 million settlement with four other automakers reached in May.

Consumer claims are pending against two other automakers, Honda Motor Co. and Ford Motor Co.

Trump's 'Fire And Fury' Remarks Disquiet Markets; Bump Oil, Gas
People walk past a television screen showing US President Donald Trump at a railway station in Seoul on August 9, 2017.

At least 18 deaths and 180 injuries worldwide have been tied to a defect that can cause Takata inflators to explode with excessive force, unleashing metal shrapnel inside cars and trucks.

The programs in the settlement "are meant to significantly increase customer outreach and to accelerate recall remedy completion rates, " Steve Yeager, a spokesman for Nissan North America, said in an emailed statement. It would also compensate owners for expenses while getting their cars fixed, including rental cars. It was among the vehicles subjected to a recall to fix defective front-passenger air bags.

The settlement was filed Tuesday in federal court in Miami.

Takata and TK Holdings Inc, the company´s USA unit, filed for bankruptcy in June and said they faced tens of billions of dollars in liabilities from its inflators, which are subject to the biggest recall in automotive history.
