The Energy Information Administration's report on U.S. crude oil inventories showed stockpiles falling much more than expected. Brent crude was flat at $52.16. the fall in price could have been attributed to rising gasoline inventories.

Against the greenback, the Swiss franc eased about 0.1 percent to 0.9645 per dollar, having surged about 1.1 percent on Wednesday.
