Billy Big Rigger! 'Platooning' Self-Driving E-Trucks Next on Tesla's List

There will be more than one of these self-driving trucks, with Reuters reporting on a viewed email between Tesla and Nevada's DMV.

Platooning is when a group of vehicles travels close together at electronically coordinated speeds; the technique increases fuel efficiency by lessening drag.

Tesla's plans were made public following an email discussion between Tesla and the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), as seen by Reuters.

Tesla said earlier this year it will unveil an electric big rig in September.

Self-driving vehicles have been in the news a lot lately, with companies like Uber looking at developing driverless commercial vehicles, making the whole industry pretty competitive.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk put out a few teasers in the spring, but had not mentioned the truck was going to be autonomous.

Chuck D Calls for NFL Boycott Over Colin Kaepernick
Last season Kaepernick was the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers last season but will not join that team this season. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way.

The commitment was also made clear and repeated during the company's annual shareholder meeting in June.

Developing autonomous or self-driving vehicles have become a common aims of the Silicon Valley companies.

Since October, Tesla has been adding fully autonomous functions to all Model S and Model X units being built, and announced that the new technology would later be applied to the Model 3.

Tesla is looking to test a fleet of self-driving electric trucks in Nevada and California according to new details revealed in an email between the Silicon Valley-based electric auto giant and Nevada's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). They've crafted a plan for world domination that includes electric cars, self-driving technology, solar power, and energy storage, among other things-and they're not done yet.

Reuters also reported that California DMV officials will meet with Tesla this week "to talk about Tesla's efforts with autonomous trucks".

Meanwhile, there is no official date out as of now for Tesla to conduct trials of the self-driving semi trucks in Nevada. Ars has reached out to Tesla for comment and we'll update if we receive a response.
