Fruitcake, anyone? This 100-year-old treat is still fresh and yum!

Still smells good The cake despite being 106 years old is edible according to conservationists at the Antarctic Heritage Trust

Conservators with Antarctic Heritage Trust have uncovered a perfectly preserved fruitcake that dates back to Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova expedition, which began in 1910.

The Antarctic Heritage Trust found a almost edible 100-year-old fruitcake in the oldest building in Antarctica, according to reports Thursday.

Tragically, the cake may have survived, but Scott's entire party died on the return journey from the pole. "It [the fruitcake] is an ideal high-energy food for Antarctic conditions, and is still a favourite item on modern trips to the ice", she said. But the most surprising is definitely the century-old fruit cake. In fact, the researchers described it as in "excellent condition" and smelling not bad. "Living and working in Antarctica tends to lead to a craving for high-fat, high-sugar food, and fruitcake fits the bill nicely, not to mention going very well with a cup of tea".

Cape Adare where the cake was found is shown in relation to the expedition taken by Captain Scott's ill-fated party. Scott himself died in the Ross Ice Shelf
Hundred-year-old fruitcake found in Antarctic hut

After the procedures, the cake and all the artifacts found will be returned to the site. It was found in one of the oldest huts in Antarctica. The dessert, made by British cake makers Huntley & Palmers, was found wrapped in paper inside the remains of a tin, and was "almost edible", the organisation said in a statement. The Terra Nova expedition was primarily scientific, but Scott also wanted to be the first person to reach the South Pole.

Archeology teams have been excavating artifacts from a hut that Scott's Northern Party used during its expedition. Unfortunately, upon arrival, they discovered that Roald Amundsen's Norwegian team had beaten them to it by 34 days.

They really could have done with that cake.
