'Rhinestone Cowboy' singer Glen Campbell laid to rest in Arkansas

The news of 81-year-old Glen Campbell's death from Alzheimer's Disease saddened many people, not least those who had seen him in concert at venues including casinos across the United States.

Campbell was unique in the music business. It was during a day-off on that tour that late HPR Evening Jazz Host Don Gordon invited HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence to the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor for an evening on a sailboat owned by the late Steve Ozark, of Caterer to the Stars and a longtime Glen Campbell/Don Gordon friend. Then, the following year, the 2014 documentary Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me - one of the best of its kind - documented his battle with Alzheimer's as he embarks on his farewell world tour and the pain his family endured dealing with his care.

Campbell's expansive career included not only a string of country hits like "Wichita Lineman" and "Rhinestone Cowboy", but he was a session musician for a diverse list of artists including the Monkees, Frank Sinatra and Merle Haggard.

Completed while he was already suffering from the ravages of Alzheimer's, Campbell's final album, Adios, was released in June.

'Deadpool' Director Tim Miller to Helm Cyberpunk Adaptation 'Neuromancer'
Neuromancer has been credited with popularising the word "cyberspace", which Gibson coined in his 1982 novelette Burning Chrome. This project doesn't now have a screenwriter or a release date, so it's unclear where it would fall in Miller's schedule.

Glen Campbell was a rare entertainer who got to say goodbye to his life and career in every way he knew how. He would hear a song once and immediately be able to commit it to memory. Campbell was born in the small Arkansa town of Billstown, which is near Delight. He was taught to play by his Uncle Boo. They played gigs together in rural joints before moving to Los Angeles.

Campbell was a member of the Wrecking Crew, a group of ultra talented studio musicians who played on tons of records in the 1960s and 70s.

But his breakout success came in 1967 with the song Gentle on My Mind and his album By the Time I Get to Phoenix was named Album of the Year at the 1968 Grammy Awards.

Campbell's baby face also loomed large in the first Western I remember seeing on a big screen, "True Grit". The retired president Bill Clinton suggested the documentary would make Campbell remembered for more than his music. Campbell's best-selling single, Rhinestone Cowboy, was released in 1975 and has sold more than five million copies.

Campbell was married four times and had eight children.
