Tesla: Self-Driving Semi-Trucks On The Way

Reuters exclusively reported on Wednesday that Tesla is now developing a self-driving semitruck, which the solar and tech company hopes to test out on Nevada roads.

In an email to the Nevada DMV, Tesla sought permission to "operate our prototype test trucks in a continuous manner across the state line and within the states of Nevada and California in a platooning and/or autonomous mode without having a person in the vehicle", which would be one of the first tests not including a human driver in the vehicle if permitted.

Tesla is now involved in an email discussion with the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) regarding the same, as quoted by Reuters.

The correspondence and meetings with state officials show that Tesla moving forward in a highly competitive area of commercial transport also being pursued by Uber and Alphabet's former Google vehicle company, now called Waymo.

While Tesla is yet to officially unveil its next-generation electric semi truck, a report in Reuters added a new turn to the already swirling rumors by claiming that the next-generation truck will have self-driving capabilities.

Auto industry experts have long expected that autonomous vehicle technology will roll out widely in trucks before other vehicles.

Silicon Valley companies have investigated how to build long-haul trucks that have self-drive technology, too, according to Reuters. Most analysts agree fully autonomous semi trucks won't be ready for another 10 years or more; platooning is a precursor to the self-driving technology.

The new electric truck in question here is believed to be able to travel in "platoons" - which means autonomously following the path of a leading vehicle. Daimler, Volvo, and other semi-truck makers have invested in the technology and carried out demonstrations on highways. She said that the DMV was not aware of the level of autonomy in the trucks. They declined to comment further.

Musk confirmed of Tesla working on heavy-duty electric trucks in one of his tweets in June.
