Venezuela's Maduro wants 'personal conversation' with Trump

The US President has been engaged in a war of words with North Korea of late

The latest measures were meant to make good on the Trump administration's threats to sanction anyone involved with the new assembly, which has the power to rewrite the country's constitution.

"We had some very good meetings, some very good ideas, very good thoughts, and a lot of decisions were made", Trump said following the briefing, without providing any details.

The new measures announced by the Treasury Department will freeze their USA assets, ban them from travel to the United States and prohibit Americans from doing business with them.

The government-packed Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the removal and imprisonment for 15 months of Caracas-area Mayor David Smolansky for not obeying orders to shut down protests in his district. Maduro claims it will help reconcile and bring peace to the nation.

It followed up this week with more sanctions against several members of the assembly.

That body has been given the job of rewriting Venezuela's Constitution, in what the United States has said was an attempt by Maduro to solidify his hold on power.

Venezuela has come under fire for using excess force against demonstrators during four months of anti-government protests by citizens outraged over rampant inflation and shortages of food and medicine.

"These terrorist actions which affected the Movilnet's GSM platform on Wednesday left without communication seven of the state operator's 13 million users", Science and Technology Minister Hugbel Roa said.

He said it was part of a wave of attacks that began Monday when dozens of government and private company websites were hacked.

Polls suggest the opposition would win most of the states, if the elections are fair, replicating its landslide 2015 victory in taking control of the National Assembly.

Credit Suisse Group (CSGN.S) has barred transactions involving certain Venezuelan bonds and is requiring that business with Venezuela's government and related agencies undergo a reputation risk review, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters.

Opposition leaders and governments around the world have decried the assembly's creation as the consolidation of a dictatorship.
