700k contaminated eggs have been sold in the UK

The semi-autonomous Chinese territory of Hong Kong was the only non European place mentioned

The UK's food watchdog says about 700 thousand contaminated eggs were imported from the Netherlands, up from an earlier estimate of 21 thousand.

The EU's food safety commissioner has called for an end to "blaming and shaming" between countries, after eggs were found to contain traces of an insecticide unsafe to humans.

The fipronil-in-eggs contamination scare that has rocked Europe's egg sector saw two major developments today (10 August), with United Kingdom supermarkets pulling processed food products and two individuals arrested in the Netherlands over the affair.

However, the Food Standards Agency is also playing down public health risks, saying it affects less than one percent of eggs consumed in Britain.

It added that numerous eggs involved were mixed with other eggs which have not come from affected farms so Fipronil residues will be highly diluted. It can damage humans' kidneys, liver and thyroid glands if ingested in large quantities.

"Samples analysed in the Netherlands show traces of fipronil in the eggs, but not as a health hazard", the agency said.

Traceability on the eggs from the Netherlands contaminated with fipronil is continuing, according to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI).

'Let's See' What N. Korea Does With Guam
We're with you 1,000%. "If caught outside, do not look at the flash or fireball - It can blind you". Governor said the people of Guam feel safe.

Today Dutch and Belgian police conducted raids as part of an investigation into the use of a harmful pesticide in the poultry industry, the Dutch prosecution service said.

Fipronil, which is found in eggs, is used to destroy fleas, lice, ticks and cockroaches.

Millions of eggs have been pulled off the shelves in Belgium and Germany, following news of the scare, and 180 farms have been temporarily closed. It is "very unlikely" there is any risk to public health, the FSA said. "The Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland are committed to ensuring that food is safe, and that United Kingdom consumers have food they can trust".

FSA chairwoman Heather Hancock said: "I'm confident that acting quickly is the right thing to do".

European Union commissioner for health and food safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis, stressed that the meeting would not be a crisis summit, nor would its objective be to apportion blame.

Fipronil is not permitted for use around food-producing animals like hens.

Dutch investigators have detained two men suspected of being involved in the illegal use of a pesticide at poultry farms that sparked a massive food safety scare in several countries.
