Alexis Sanchez is now more likely to consider staying at Arsenal

Mauricio Pochettino Tottenham Newcastle

Alexis Sanchez is injured and out of Arsenal's opening Premier League game against Leicester and is a doubt for their trop to Stoke a week later.

"Alexis Sanchez is out for a while", Wenger said during a press conference on Wednesday.

According to a report by The Sun, Arsenal are determined to retain Alexis Sanchez beyond the transfer window and have offered him a new £300,000-a-week contract to ward off the likes of Manchester City and PSG. "He had an abdominal strain and could be out for one or two weeks".

The final player who could miss out on Friday is Mesut Ozil as Wenger has confirmed the German playmaker is still feeling the effects of an ankle injury that kept him out of the Chelsea game at the weekend.

Elsewhere, Wenger has ruled out a move for Leicester wide man Mahrez after insisting the Gunners were "never close" in their pursuit of the player, per Jon Paul of the Leicester Mercury: "We were never close".

Securing a new deal for Ozil will be a significant boost for the Gunners and they're certainly aided by the fact that interest in the German's services from across Europe has cooled, with none of the interested parties prepared to pay the sort of price the player is looking for.

Sanchez is not the only Arsenal player that is in the a year ago of their contracts, with Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's contracts also expiring in June 2018, and it will be interesting to see how Arsenal deal with these situations.

But Wenger says his striker remains concentrated on matters at the Emirates Stadium.

"He is today very conscious of his qualities as well, which he was not always, and I personally believe he will be a very great player".

While Ozil and Ramsey missed the Community Shield, Mertesacker was taken off injured after sustaining a head injury.

Now Sanchez is a hard choice - to sign the main contract of his life or go to another club who set themselves more ambitious goals. He's not going to come back and hurt you.
