Arsenal beat Leicester City 4-3 in Premier League opener

Olivier Giroud insisted Arsenal never gave up hope of staging a dramatic fightback as the France striker's late victor capped a thrilling 4-3 victory over Leicester in Friday's Premier League opener.

The match seemed to be following the normal script as the Gunners trailed the visitors 3-2, until Aaron Ramsey levelled things up with seven minutes on the clock, before Giroud sealed the three points in the 88th minute with a thunderous header.

The lead unfortunately wouldn't last long as Leicester City eventually equalized just two minutes later, but the memory is one that both Lacazette and Arsenal fans will hold onto, as their new boy provided plenty of promise for the coming season.

Jamie Vardy then struck twice, either side of a Danny Welbeck equaliser, as the 2015-16 champions looked for a first league win over Arsenal since 1983 - but it was not to be. In the end he made a decision to stay and it was one of the great days of the recent weeks for me.

Ever since France striker Alexandre Lacazette joined in July for a club-record 60 million euros ($68 million), the future of compatriot Giroud has been in doubt.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino reassures fans that signings will be made
Back in May he was rewarded with a new five-year contract, so Tottenham might have to break the bank if they are to sign him. He said the club is calm and doesn't understand why it's such a big problem this year.

"It is fantastic", Wenger replied when asked about Giroud's willingness to fight for his place.

"I opened the door for him at some stage as it's important for him to play but I don't want him to go", Wenger said at the post-match news conference. Just a few minutes later, he would net the goal that would secure the win for Arsenal to start the season.

"Overall I must say we kept going and the spirit of the team was absolutely outstanding and overall you could say as well we were punished on every single mistake tonight by a Leicester team who was very efficient going forward". "One was a corner, one on build-up, one on a corner again", he said. He adapts slowly to the way we want to play.

"I think last season was such a disruptive season, I didn't like it".

The Serie A side have now said they will not increase their offer and Shakespeare is happy to have Mahrez in the team.
