Burnley Stun Nine-Man Chelsea At The Bridge

Chelsea brought in Alvaro Morata in the second half and it paid off as the Spaniad got his first goal for the club to make it 3-1 in the 69th minute of the game.

Morata had a goal disallowed for offside but then Fabregas was sent off, perhaps harshly, for a tackle on Jack Cork with eight minutes remaining.

Chelsea had not lost on the opening day of the season since 1998 and paraded the Premier League trophy before kick-off as a reminder of the size of the task facing the Clarets.

Tottenham at Wembley is Chelsea's next assignment, and they must now face their most hated rivals without Cahill and Fabregas, as well as Eden Hazard, Tiemoue Bakayoko and the exiled Diego Costa.

After just 15 minutes, they were also reduced to ten men when Gary Cahill was given a straight red card.

There were three other youngsters on the Chelsea bench - as if to underline the thin-ness of the squad that Conte takes into the new season. Little contact was made, but intent was enough for a sending off.

Six minutes before half-time, left-back Stephen Ward made it 2-0 in stunning fashion.

The Terriers were the better side and got the goals to prove it, with record signing Steve Mounie striking twice after Joel Ward's own goal had given David Wagner's side the lead. Disjointed and embarrassed in the first half, Chelsea threatened to mount the most unlikely of comebacks in a stirring second-half display, but just failed to overcome their numerical disadvantage.

They were expected to suffer another defeat when the fixtures list came out and they were scheduled to face league champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge but things went off-script.

But they held out, fully earning a result that sees them match their tally of Premier League away wins in the whole of last season.

The 2017/18 Premier League season is finally under way and here's what happened on the opening Saturday...
