Federer Reigns, But Canadian Wildcard Shapovalov Looms at ATP Montreal

0:36 | Tennis Stan Wawrinka Shuts Down 2017 Season Due to Knee Injury

Federer's chances of winning another title of the season were given a boost when top seed Rafael Nadal was upset by world No. 143 Denis Shapovalov of Canada on Thursday night.

The Canadian wildcard was fearless in the deciding set, earning another crucial break in the ninth game.

The second-seeded Federer continued his mastery over 12th-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. The 18-year-old left-hander from Richmond Hill, Ontario beat France's Adrian Mannarino 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 and awaits the victor of the late match between fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany and Kevin Anderson of South Africa. Shapovalov put Mannarino in trouble with a big serve at 30-30, but he rushed an overhead to give the Frenchman the break point.

Hitting 19 unforced errors to 12 winners, the 18-year-old found momentum after a short rain delay, immediately securing a key break in the sixth game of the second set. "I got some decent rhythm going".

"It pays off playing aggressively here in Montreal, plus I feel comfortable at net, so why not spend some time there instead of slugging it out from the baseline", Federer said.

"I'm looking forward to a tough match because he can serve very well and he mixes up his tactics a lot", said Federer. Haase said it was hard for both players after playing tough three-set matches against seeded players earlier in the week.

Both the Rogers Cup and the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati are tune-up events for the final Grand Slam tournament on the tennis calendar, the US Open, which gets under way on August 28.

Nowhere was Federer's wayward performance better illustrated than in the seventh game, when he squandered three break points at 0-40 to allow Ferrer to take a 5-2 lead.

On track for a third Rogers Cup triumph, the Swiss great will meet Haase, who recovered from dropping the first set against Schwartzman to book his first ATP 1000 semi-final berth.

Haase has had to overcome several injuries in his career but says he is finally in a good place.

"I didn't even know if I could ever play tennis again", Haase said. "The crowd really lifted me". I was not as fast.

"I've been working on it a lot in the past few years". It drains you because you know you can do better.
