Redskins' Trent Murphy to miss season with torn ACL

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco

The Redskins wanted to be creative with their outside linebackers, with both Smith and Murphy capable of playing inside in certain packages - as they did on occasion in 2016. Murphy twisted his left knee awkwardly and was rolled up on during the first quarter of Thursday's game.

The Redskins had initially labeled the injury as a sprained knee, but he left the locker room with his leg heavily wrapped and on crutches, according to 247 Sports.

Murphy was going to start the regular season suspended for the first four games after violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs. It will not carry over to 2018 when Murphy is healthy. The bad news is Murphy is done for the year, costing the Redskins a valuable rotational presence who broke out for nine sacks and three forced fumbles last season. A full-time starter past year, Smith saw his pass-rushing productivity decline.

Sammy Watkins, Buffalo Bills wide receiver, traded to Los Angeles Rams
As for Darby, who finished second in voting for defensive rookie of the year in 2015, he has two years remaining on his contract. They have the Rams second-round pick and the Eagles third-round pick in addition to their own choices in those respective rounds.

Murphy is coming off a season that saw him play in all 16 games.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported an initial MRI showed Murphy tore his ACL.
