Stocks slide on continued concern over tension between United States and North Korea

Losses in health care and consumer-focused companies pulled US stocks broadly lower Tuesday, snapping a 10-day winning streak for the Dow Jones industrial average.

The index's losses mirrored global markets, which fell after incendiary words between the United States and North Korea.

The remarks, following North Korea's earlier revelation of a plan to launch a salvo of ballistic missiles toward the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam, gave investors further incentive to take to the sidelines at least in stock markets. Germany's DAX fared better, trading only 0.2 percent lower at 11,989. The NASDAQ Composite Index fell 0.28% and closed the day at 6,352.33.

The S&P hasn't moved more than 0.5 percent in one day since July and has fallen more than 1 percent only twice this year.

Dow e-minis were up 6 points, or 0.03 percent, with 29,187 contracts changing hands at 8:34 a.m. ET (1234 GMT).

The S&P's record close on August 7 likely helped fuel its latest sell-off. Gold is often seen as a safe haven for investors during uncertain times, such as the heated exchanges between U.S. President Donald Trump and the North Korean regime.

Winners and Losers: Live-events company Live Nation saw its stock climb more than five percent Thursday on news that concert ticket sales jumped 22 percent from a year ago. Non-OPEC production will get a health check later today when the Baker Hughes U.S. rig count is published at 1:00 p.m.

Overseas markets were also lower Wednesday.

The CBOE Volatility Index .VIX , the most widely followed barometer of expected near-term stock market volatility, rose to a near three-month high of 15.36.

Shares of SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. slid 6.2 percent after the theme park operator reported second-quarter revenue that fell short of Wall Street's expectations.

Macy's shares closed down 10.2 per cent and Kohl's fell nearly 6 per cent as the companies continued to report a drop in quarterly same-store sales, stoking concerns that their turnarounds may still be a long way off.

Right now, we're going to treat the current selling as a much needed short-term correction.

S&P 500 e-minis were up 1.5 points, or 0.06 percent, with 300,073 contracts traded.

The rhetoric between the USA and North Korea has continued to heat up, leading traders to look to safe havens such as gold and treasuries.

Offsetting the declines was a 0.4 percent gain by the materials group, which includes gold producers.
