WeChat, Weibo Among Targets in China Cybersecurity Probe

The Office for Cyberspace Administration said the three platforms had failed to police content on their sites.

China has started to investigate the top social media websites based in the country, including Weibo and WeChat, for not complying with its cyber laws.

Baidu, one of the companies being investigated, said it regretted the facilitation of illegal content on its Tieba platform and explained that it'll "actively cooperate with government departments to rectify the issue and increase the intensity of auditing".

But despite the tight surveillance and censorship, dissent still bubbles away and, ahead of a highly sensitive Communist Party Congress this autumn, the authorities are tightening those controls further. Tencent and Weibo did not respond to requests for comment.

Shares of Naspers fell more than 3 percent to four-week lows on Friday after China launched an investigation into its top social media sites, including the South African media company's subsidiary Tencent's WeChat.

Shares of the firm, based in Hong Kong were down following the news, by close to 5%. Investors will now be waiting to see how shares of the US -listed firms react.

China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo, the instant messaging app WeChat, and Baidu Tieba, the popular bulletin board consisting of 19 million sub-forums, are considered the three largest communication platforms in China.

Last month, the cyber authorities called on the same companies to carry out immediate "cleaning and rectification" at a meeting with their representatives, where the authorities cited specific examples of illicit content, including rumours about party officials and misrepresenting Chinese military history. In May, it released regulations for online news sites and network portals that expanded curbs on content and required all services to be overseen by party-sanctioned editorial staff.
