Arsenal score two late goals for comeback win vs. Leicester City

Arsene Wenger is relieved Olivier Giroud opted to stay at Arsenal this summer after the striker scored the victor in Friday's Premier League opener against Leicester.

Leicester showed plenty of endeavour as they came close to causing an upset in the Premier League's first fixture.

Alexandre Lacazette and Shinji Okazaki bagged the first two goals of the season after just a few minutes, and Jamie Vardy and Danny Welbeck added to the scoreline before the end of the first half.

But then Arsenal's super-subs came to the rescue: Aaron Ramsey drew the scores on 83 minutes, before Giroud's sublime header gave the Gunners all three points.

Instead, Wenger avoided a third consecutive season-opening loss at the start of his new two-year contract.

"You know, I must say I opened the door for him at some stage because I know that it's important for him to play".

Many observers may have thought Giroud's days at Arsenal were numbered following the arrival of fellow France striker Lacazette from Lyon for a club-record £46.5m fee.

Asked if Giroud could still leave before the transfer window closes on August 31 until January, Wenger replied: "No".

"Top quality game and you want PL to be best in the world and you have to produce games like that", Wenger told reporters. Not only as a player, he's a fantastic player but as well in the group.

"He doesn't want to leave and I'm happy he wants to stay".

"It's simple, in every game he is stronger since he joined us", Wenger said.

"We have got a tough first run but we now can take a lot of confidence from this game, knowing we can go to the big teams and put on a performance and hopefully in the coming games we get that bit of luck and turn the positive performance into good points".

"We had some avoidable goals which we conceded and overall we have to work on that", he said referring to poor marking in the by his team's defence.

"I think we have all seen the amusing business of the transfer window and we never know what is round the corner".
