Arsenal urged to avoid a Robin van Persie situation with Alexis Sanchez

Alexis Arsenal PSG

Arsene Wenger has spoken about the future of Alexis Sanchez, and it doesn't make for good reading - if you're an Arsenal fan at least.

"I feel that they've just got to get back in the top four".

The latest round of rumours have linked Sanchez, who has less than 12 months to run on his current contract at Arsenal, with an £80million move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits that he is "not super optimistic" about Alexis Sanchez's contract situation.

Wenger has of course repeatedly stated that Sanchez will stay at Arsenal this season and said the Chilean forward "has to respect that decision" but is something else going on here?

Wenger said Sanchez would be missed but admitted he would not have started the game against Leicester even if he was deemed fit to play.

Alexandre Lacazette scored 91 goals in the French Ligue 1 over the last four seasons; more than any other player in the competition in that period.

When asked if Arsenal have received any bids from PSG for the 28-year-old, Wenger replied: "I can not tell you that".

Wenger eventually signed a new two-year contract extension following an end to a campaign which finished on a high with victory in the FA Cup final after failing to secure Champions League qualification for the first time under his long tenure.

Wenger also dismissed media reports linking Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with rivals, Chelsea. "He's out for, er, I don't know".

"He's very conscious of his qualities, he was not always".

"Plenty of uncertainties about players who didn't play against Chelsea - Ramsey, Ozil, Mertesacker".

Arsenal will be without Alexis Sanchez for the first few weeks of the Premier League season.

He added: "I'm convinced in 10 or 15 years it will not necessarily be a football specialist who is a manager of a club".
