Assam flood situation worsens

Currently, 63,797 individuals are taking shelter in the relief camps.

A report of the State Emergency Response Centre of the Disaster Management wing said several major rivers, including Howrah River, which passes through the capital city, were flowing above the danger mark.

Floods and landslides triggered by rain has also thrown life out of gear in Arunachal Pradesh.

The 19 districts so far affected due to the current wave of flood included Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Morigaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. More than 25 lakh people in 29 districts of the state had already been affected by the floods. "More than half of the relief camp inmates are in Kokrajhar district", an ASDMA officer said.

"There have been incessant rains in the state for the last 24 hours and at least six rivers are in spate and flowing above danger levels", an ASDMA official said, adding 781 villages in the districts had been inundated. The district administration has closed down 225 schools in flood-affected areas in Tinsukia district.

A total of 124 animals including 9 one horned rhinos were died in the world heritage site in the first wave of flood.

He announced an additional Rs 250 crore for flood relief operations in Assam.

Saying that flood is not only Assam's problem as it also causes havoc in neighboring coutries like Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh etc, Sonowal stated that a multi state and multi nation approach for finding permanent solution to the problem of flood would be adopted by the government so that recurring damages and devastations can be avoided in future.

Flash floods and landslides have also affected large swathes of Namsai and West Siang districts of Arunachal Pradesh, washing away bridges and damaging roads. Parts of Garo hills are also cut off from the rest of the state.

River Dikhow and Desang in Sibsagar district of Assam are likely to flow in Moderate to High Flood situation during the period from 10th to 13th August 2017.
