British government to outline aims in Brexit talks

Stormont-castle

Chancellor Philip Hammond and International Trade Secretary Liam Fox have come together to declare that a post-Brexit transition would not be a "back door" to Britain remaining in the EU.

"During this period our borders must continue to operate smoothly; goods bought on the internet must still cross borders; businesses must still be able to supply their customers across the European Union and our innovative, world-leading companies must be able to hire the talent they need, including from within the European Union", the article read.

Writing in The Observer, he said the country should have the chance to vote on any Brexit deal in a second referendum with a straight choice between remaining in the European Union and the negotiated alternative.

Over the coming 10 days, a number of Government papers will be published spelling out the UK's Brexit blueprint on key issues including the customs union, the Irish border, fisheries and agriculture.

The British government wants to show progress so the broader negotiations can commence by October.

Estimates of how much Britain will have to pay to fulfill its obligations from the period of its membership until March 2019 are in the tens of billions of euros range but estimates vary widely among European Union and United Kingdom politicians and economists.

The Sunday Telegraph reported that Britain was seeking a "Schengen area" between Britain and Ireland, which would allow free movement of people and a "light-touch customs regime " across the border of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Upton walk-off homer caps wild, seesaw win for Tigers
Berrios may be struggling while Zimmerman has been okay lately, but I don't trust Zimmerman to lead the Tigers to a win today. His heroics were on display once again Saturday night as he carried the Tigers to a 12-11 walk off victory over the Twins.

Chapman said Friday "there is an enormous gap in the center now of British politics" that could be filled by an anti-Brexit force.

The UK government said it was preparing several papers, including plans for a new customs arrangement and for the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

They write that there will be a "time-limited" transition period that would "further our national interest and give business greater certainty", but insist that Brexit will not be halted.

David Davis, the Brexit secretary said the publication of the papers, which will begin this week, would mark "an important next step" towards delivering last year's referendum vote to leave the EU.

Prime Minister Theresa May will hope the intervention of the two ministers will cool temperatures in the Tory ranks amid divisions over Brexit and speculation of a possible leadership challenge when MPs return to Westminster in September.

Some still dispute her approach, with former foreign minister for the now-opposition Labour party David Miliband and pro-EU Conservative MP Anna Soubry warning in Sunday newspapers of the economic "self-harm" of leaving the single market.
