Canadian Army Builds Tents for Asylum Seekers Fleeing US

Olympic Stadium In Quebec Turned Into Welcome Center For Refugees From US

The military-built camp would house hundreds of asylum seekers in heated tents fitted with flooring and electricity while they wait for their refugee applications to be processed, said a statement from the military.

Canada deployed dozens of soldiers this week to erect heated tents for migrants crossing the US border from NY into southern Quebec.

Canada's CBC News said authorities have struggled in recent weeks to handle the influx of asylum seekers at Roxham Road.

Patrick Lefort, a spokesman for the Canada Border Services Agency, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation there is now a backlog of asylum seekers at Roxham Road, a popular crossing point near Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Quebec.

The surge has overwhelmed local immigration officials and the army has been called in to erect tents to house about 500 people in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, the nearest town.

Canada's Third Safe Country agreement with the US means that most asylum seekers who attempt to cross at legal border crossings are turned away because the U.S.is considered a safe country.

European Union adds nine people, four entities to North Korea sanctions list
The EU's sanctions are seen as its efforts to intensify pressure against North Korea amid the escalating war of words between Pyongyang and Washington.

From Jan. 1 to June 30, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police - the federal agency responsible for border security between legal crossings - has intercepted 4,345 asylum seekers, according to statistics provided by the federal government.

A growing number of migrants have also been taken in at different temporary shelters in Montreal, including at the Olympic Stadium.

The majority of those asylum seekers, or 3,350 people, crossed into Quebec, while 646 crossed into Manitoba and 332 people crossed into British Columbia.

Numerous new arrivals are Haitian nationals who fear they could be deported if the USA lifts a program that granted them so-called "temporary protected status" following the quake that struck Haiti in 2010.

The same could happen in Canada if an asylum seeker's claim is rejected.
