CIA Chief: Not Surprising If N. Korea Tests Another Missile

CIA Director Mike Pompeo says nuclear war with North Korea is not 'imminent'

In an interview with Fox News Sunday he added: "They're moving towards that [goal] at an ever-alarming rate".

"Each time they test another missile, or if they should conduct a nuclear weapons text, they develop expertise, they expend the envelope".

North Korea said on Thursday that plans would be completed by mid-August to fire four intermediate-range missiles to land near the U.S. Pacific island of Guam, 2,175 miles away.

Still, he said Americans shouldn't be alarmed.

Mr Pompeo said "there's nothing imminent today", in response to a question about how anxious people should be over the escalating tensions.

But he stressed the USA is pursuing "a very determined diplomatic effort" led by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that is coupled with new financial sanctions to dissuade North Korean leader Kim Jong Un from further provocations.

He said the US has a "pretty good idea" of North Korea's intentions, but Pompeo declined to provide specifics.

President Trump wrote on Twitter on Friday that U.S.

Expect a cloudy, hot and humid Sunday
Some areas of fog may begin to form again after midnight, so locally dense fog will be a possibility early Sunday morning. The rain will stay clear of the area through the evening, leaving temperatures in the low to mid 70s and a few clouds.

Asked if the United States was prepared to handle a hostile act by North Korea, Mattis said: "We are ready".

He said President Trump was just trying to give the country's people hope when he floated the idea on Friday that the United States would take military action after condemning Venezuelan leader Nicholas Maduro for human rights abuses and calling for him to hold "free and fair elections". Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters traveling with him that he aims to "sense what the temperature is in the region".

"When I served in Korea many years ago as the director of intelligence US forces in Korea, what I was anxious about was an incendiary event getting out of hand", Clapper added.

Pompeo declined to say how long it will be before North Korea could carry out such a nuclear attack on the U.S. mainland.

"President Trump inherited a mess", Graham said.

Clapper called for a change in approach with North Korea in "accepting" the dictatorship as a nuclear power and merely attempting to "cap it or control it". "All those smart people who are criticizing his rhetoric and his policy, how well did you do?"

In a separate interview on "Fox News Sunday", Pompeo was asked about the nature and degree of threat to the USA mainland in light of Kim's continuing drive to develop North Korea's missile and nuclear capacities.
