Iran parliament ratifies legislation to counter United States anti-Iran moves

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani speaks in a campaign rally for May 19 presidential election in Tehran Iran. Iranians head to the polls Friday to vote in the Islamic Republic's presidential election

"The Americans should know that this was our first action", said speaker Ali Larijani, after announcing an overwhelming majority vote for a package "to confront terrorist and adventurist actions by the United States in the region".

The legislation is in reaction to a bill ratified recently in the US Senate allowing Washington to impose non-nuclear sanctions against the Islamic Republic, IRNA reported.

It is understood that while a total of 247 lawmakers were present at the parliament session, the bill secured 240 yes votes and one abstention.

The legislative move by Iran follows US President Donald Trump's signing of a sanctions bill on Russia, Iran and North Korea on August 2.

The bill was submitted to the Majlis Presiding Board, by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defense, Intelligence, as well as the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC), the IRGC Quds Force, and the Islamic Republic Army.

Tehran says the measures violate a 2015 deal with world powers that eased sanctions in exchange for curbs on its nuclear programme.

The plan would require Iran's government and armed forces to draw up a strategy to counter U.S. violations of human rights around the world, and to support Iranian bodies and individuals affected by U.S. sanctions. The US legislation would impose mandatory penalties on people involved in Iran's ballistic missile program and anyone who does business with them.

Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who is the head of an Iranian commission tasked with monitoring the agreement's implementation, told MPs that the government backed the bill which he described "very strong".

The motion was designed in view of continued bellicose policies of the United States towards Iran, and its persisting measures aimed at endangering peace and security in the region, it said.

The bill includes Iran's countermeasure plans for any USA acts of exploitation and terrorism in the region, as well as the Western country's hostile moves that undermine the successful implementation of Iran's nuclear deal, dubbed JCPOC, which went into effect in January 2016.
