Nobody more pained than me: Adityanath on Gorakhpur tragedy

30 children died in 2 Days

The issue of settlement of the pending money is what costed the lives of little ones. Later, the chief of the hospital was suspended by the Yogi goverment.

Opposition leaders blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which rules the state, accusing it of neglect and indifference.

Former UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has also called for a strict investigation into matter demanding Rs 20 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased children.

District Magistrate Rajiv Rautela said on Saturday that the deaths of the children in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh state, were due to natural causes.

UP Health Minister Sidhartha Nath Singh, however, said the oxygen supply went down on August 10, but the situation was brought under control within a few hours.

So far at least 71, including infants, have died from encephalitis at the BRD Medical College hospital.

The number of oxygen cylinders sent for refilling each day, showed a clear shortage of liquid oxygen in the hospital, as per the procured data.

"There haven't been any deaths due to lack of oxygen supply".

Talking to media in Gorakhpur, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said, "We are deeply saddened by the incident".

The BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur did not specify the cause of death, but said 34 of babies who died were at the neo-natal intensive care unit, while 12 died because of encephalitis. "There was inadequate oxygen supply for those 2 hours, but the administration had ensured that there is no shortage of cylinders at the hospital", the health minister added.

Congress Vice President also tweeted about children dying in the hospitals on Friday, August 11.

"This incident took place due to the laxity on the part of state government".
