Sally Pearson roars back to win world 100m hurdles gold

Sally Pearson en route to securing a berth in the women s 100m hurdles in London

Six years after her first world title in the event, Sally Pearson struck gold once again as she won the 100-meter hurdles title at the World Athletics Championships in the same stadium where she won the Olympic title five years ago.

Harper Nelson, the 2008 Olympic champion and silver medalist behind Pearson in 2012 took silver in 12.63 ahead of Germany's Pamela Dutkiewicz, who claimed a surprise bronze in 12.72.

"Far out, that was bloody hard", gasped Pearson, who became only the fourth woman to win the world title a few times. "I watched her warm up out there out of the corner of my eye and they were doing things that I thought were a bit different to what she had normally done as part of her warm-up and I thought there were perhaps a few demons going through her head", Hilliard said.

"It's been a long journey back from injury, but to get this moment and go and celebrate in front of my family is unreal".

The Australian was already seen as one of the greatest hurdlers of all time heading into this final, though her triumph here after a fractured wrist in 2015 and a hamstring injury in 2016 seeing her miss the World Championships and Olympics respectively will only add to her status as an all-time great.

"I knew that I could (coach myself), I wasn't anxious about writing the program out, I knew what I could and couldn't handle, it was just a matter of "am I going to do it right?"

Defending champion Danielle Williams of Jamaica failed to make the final while last year's Olympic champion Brianna Rollins, who led an American sweep of the Rio podium, is banned for a doping violation.

The arrivals of defender Victor Lindelof , midfielder Nemanja Matic and striker Romelu Lukaku have also improved the squad. Winning the Premier League should nearly be mandatory for Guardiola in his second season at the Etihad Stadium.

"I never doubted it, she knows her body".

Hilliard said it was hard to overstate what Pearson had overcome to get back to the top of the world.

She assumed favouritism for the world title by clocking the fastest semi-final time of 12.53 on Friday evening and carried that dominance into the final.

Her next challenge will be winning a third successive Commonwealth title on home soil on the Gold Coast next year. However, the American was overhauled by strong finishes from Harper-Nelson and Dutkiewicz (and eventually Harrison, who finished in fourth after a strong final two hurdles) though no one could get close to the Australian, who took the victory.

"(She amazes me) every day", said Kieran Pearson, who travels the world track and field circuit with his wife.

"Silver tastes like gold tonight", she said. "There were so many big names in the field and since I was a girl I have been admiring Sally Pearson".
