One person was killed on Saturday when a vehicle slammed into a crowd in Virginia after clashes at a gathering of white nationalists who oppose plans to remove the statue of a Confederate general from a public park, officials said.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe had already declared a state of emergency when a dark sedan surged into a crowd of what witnesses said was counter-demonstrators in the picturesque university city of Charlottesville. Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer said in a statement that the rally was "a cowardly parade of hatred, bigotry, racism, and intolerance" that passed by the statue Jefferson, who founded the university in 1819.

The auto ran into a group of people protesting against the white supremacist march, and the driver has been arrested, according to eye-witnesses said.

At least one person was killed and 19 others injured in the crash, officials said, and the driver was taken into custody.

Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Brian Moran said the driver, a man, has been arrested.

State police tweeted that some in the crowd were using pepper spray. Not Donald Trump, not Barack Obama, this has been going on for a long, long time. There are not "many sides" here, just right and wrong, " Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, said on Twitter.

In what they called a pro-white demonstration, torch-bearing white nationalists marched Friday night through the university campus and gathered around the statue of General Robert E. Lee, a Confederate Civil War hero.

"The visibility of racists really disturbs me, and the openness of the hate is a problem", Mark Goble said. House Speaker Paul Ryan called the views of the white nationalists "repugnant", and called for Americans to unite against "this kind of vile bigotry".

Their responses may include pursuing legal action regarding "the disturbing demonstration". That thing inside the wheel is an SS pattern.

"No matter our color, creed, religion or political party we are all Americans first".

"So when I watch Charlottesville, to me it's very, very sad", Trump said.

A "GoFundMe" online fundraising campaign for "comrades" injured in the violent counter-protests in Charlottesville, Virginia has raised over $79,000 so far, according to the fund campaign website.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides", Trump told reporters at a news conference at his gold resort in New Jersey where he is now on a working summer vacation. Duke told reporters that the white nationalists were working to "fulfill the promises of Donald Trump".

Following Trump's comment, several Republicans pushed for a more explicit denunciation of white supremacists. He just said the nation should come together.

Trump, speaking at his country club in New Jersey, said "many sides" are to blame for the violence.

. He said he loves us all.

Right-wing blogger Jason Kessler had called for what he termed a "pro-white" rally to protest the city of Charlottesville's decision to remove the confederate statue from a downtown park. When pressed on what exactly the president saw or heard from the counterprotesters that was bigoted or hateful, the spokesman did not respond.
