Donuts cause massive disease outbreak in Ohio

At least 214 people have been sickened by an outbreak tied to Mama C's Donuts in Maumee, according to the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department.

Health department officials became aware of the norovirus outbreak when local hospitals notified them about a number of people who became ill after eating Mama C's food from August 4 through August 7.

Officials began investigating this week after a spate of people developed the gastrointestinal illness.

Mama C's voluntarily closed on Tuesday for cleaning and has yet to reopen.

The outbreak began late last week and all the cases that developed symptoms of the gastrointestinal virus had eaten food from the shop between August 4 and Tuesday, according to health officials.

The health department tested "specimens" from the restaurant, Zgodinski said, according to WTOL-TV Channel 11, a CBS affiliate news station in Toledo.

Reports state that owner of the doughnut shop are cooperating fully with the health inspectors and are working on deep cleaning the joint.

Odisha records second dengue death in Cuttack
So far, 84 patients have tested positive for the disease in the state, with 13 cases reported on Thursday. On Sunday a total of 28 samples from different hospitals across the state were sent for test.

Symptoms of norovirus include vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, and body aches. She said, "We feel sorry about it".

Specifically, authorities believe people who ate at the shop between Friday and Monday were infected.

Delray Busch, who has been eating at the store for two years, plans to return to Mama C despite her three-year-old daughter catching the virus earlier this week.

Zgodinski said he expects the restaurant to be closed for at least a few more days.

"Like the Health Department said, some customer could be sick and touch the counter", the employee said according to the 13abc report.

Norovirus, sometimes referred to as the winter vomiting bug in the United Kingdom and Ireland, is the most common cause of viral gastroenteritis in humans. People typically become ill 24 to 48 hours after exposure to the virus, and symptoms usually last one to two days - and it is important to note that people can spread the virus for up to two weeks after their symptoms go away.

The genus name Norovirus is derived from Norwalk virus, the only species of the genus.
