J&K: LeT commander Ayub Lelhari killed

Top Lashkar-e Taiba commander Ayub Lalhari was one of the most wanted terrorists

In a major success for the Army in the Valley, the self-styled district commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba, Ayub Lelhari, was on Wednesday gunned down in an encounter at Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir.

He said a vehicle in which the LeT commander was travelling was intercepted at Banderpora area.

The gunfight broke out at village Banderpora-Koil of Pulwama district, about 33 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Kashmir has been witnessing vigorous anti-insurgency operations by security forces in the past few months, particularly after increase in militant activities following the killing of the Hizb commander Burhan Wani in July previous year.

Ayub Lelhari is the third top militant commander killed in Kashmir this month. "We have arrested the driver but the civilian fled from the spot", the SSP said. He claimed that one AK 47 rifle, 03 magazines and 54 rounds were seized from the killed militant. The Jammu and Kashmir director general of police, SPVaid, confirmed the death on Twitter, and congratulated his men. Ayub Lelhari had joined LeT terrorist outfit in 2015 and became very important operative of LeT.

On Saturday, the security forces had gunned down three terrorists in Shopian area of the state. He was also involved in killing of Sarpanch Fayaz Ahmad Kandizal.
