Trump, in tweet, hits Amazon over taxes, jobs

In December 2015 Trump accused Bezos of using the Washington Post as a tax shelter to reduce Amazon's tax bill

Donald Trump wiped around $5.7bn dollars off the stock market valuation of Amazon in less than two hours on Wednesday, with a tweet attacking the online retail giant for "doing great damage to tax paying retailers".

Shares of the company fell 0.3 percent to $980.00 in premarket trade after Trump's comments.

Trump tweeted: "Amazon is doing great damage to tax paying retailers".

Trump tweets that "towns, cities and states throughout the USA are being hurt - many jobs being lost!"

Trump has criticized Amazon and its owner, billionaire Jeff Bezos in the past, claiming Bezos bought The Washington Post to help Amazon.

It's not the first time Trump has taken aim at Amazon for not paying taxes.

The e-commerce company does collect state sales taxes in Washington, D.C., and 45 USA states that have such a levy, the company said on its website.

As of April 1, Amazon began collecting state sales tax nationwide for products it sells directly, so called "first-party" sales, with the exception of states that don't have a sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Oregon, Montana and New Hampshire. Its decision in June to buy premium grocer Whole Foods has signaled its move into other sectors and has also raised some questions about jobs.
