CEOs Of Merck, Under Armour And Intel Resign From Trump's Business Council

Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier quit President Trump's manufacturing council on Monday

The chief executives of Intel Corp, Merck & Co Inc and Under Armour Inc resigned from USA president Donald Trump's American Manufacturing Council on Monday, following Trump's initially tepid response to weekend violence at a rally of white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia. Frazier cited a "matter of personal conscience", noting he felt "a responsibility to take a stand against intolerance and extremism". Plank stated that he is quitting because his athletic wear company engages in innovation and sports and not politics.

"Some of the folks that will leave, they're leaving out of embarrassment because they make their products outside" the United States, he said as he seemed to double down on his earlier comments.

Roughly an hour later, the resignations were rendered moot, as Trump tweeted he was ending both the manufacturing council and strategy and policy forum.

Among those who have left are the chief executives of Merck, Under Armour and Intel and the president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing.

"Whereas the president could have claimed to learn from the council, now it seems that he only listens when they agree with his opinion".

Trump's comments were met with a firestorm of backlash on social media by several groups that encouraged the CEOs of Trumps manufacturing council to resign in protest. Denise Morrison, CEO of Campbell's Soup, announced her resignation shortly after Thulin.

Trump on Monday denounced white supremacists, including neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan, as "criminals and thugs", bowing to days of mounting political pressure to condemn such groups explicitly.

In response, the Chinese government used a strongly worded editorial in state run China Daily newspaper accused Mr. Trump of "exploiting trade as a bargaining chip" - one that will "poison the overall China-U.S. relationship".

After Trump announced in June that the USA would be leaving the Paris climate accord, both Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Disney CEO Bob Iger left his business advisory council. Companies such as General Electric, Dow Chemical, Dell and Whirlpool all said they would remain. And "they know they will get called out".

He was nearly immediately attacked by Trump on Twitter. While his previous criticisms of companies or their executives have exacted retribution in the stock market, Merck's stock never faltered Monday - closing about half a percentage point higher for a second straight day of gains.

Trump's manufacturing jobs initiative formed in January, initially with 28 heavyweight business and labor leaders.

After Trump announced he would withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement, Disney chief executive Bob Iger and Tesla Motors head Elon Musk both left a White House advisory council, joining former Uber leader Travis Kalanick, who stepped down in February following criticism of Trump's travel ban.

Members of Trump's own party have called on the president to condemn Saturday's killing of a woman who had been protesting white supremacists as an act of domestic terrorism.

But publicly issued applause for Frazier from his colleagues was scant.

"As proud as I am of the efforts we were taking on behalf of the American worker, disbanding the Manufacturing Jobs Initiative was the right decision", Liveris said in a statement.
