Berkeley hot dog worker resigns after being spotted at Virginia rally

Berkeley-based hot dog chain Top Dog issued statements Monday denying the story that former cook Cole White was sacked, saying that he took "responsibility" for his actions in attending a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville and "voluntarily" resigned his position.

Management of Top Dog confirmed in an email Sunday afternoon that Cole White no longer works for the company. "We believe in individual freedom and voluntary association for everyone", multiple news outlets reported.

Check back for updates.

White was in Charlottesville for the "Unite the Right" rally, which turned deadly on Saturday.

White was first identified by the Twitter account Yes, You're Racist, which also shared a photograph of a blond man in a striped shirt amid a crowd of other white men carrying torches.

Three people died in the protests.

Charlottesville was the scene of bloody clashes that erupted Saturday between counter-protesters and various white supremacist groups that had assembled to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from Emancipation Park. A user with the handle @YesYoureRacist zoomed in on White, revealing that he worked for Top Dog.

Navy Punishes Leadership of USS Fitzgerald Following Deadly Collision
An acting commanding officer had been assigned to the Fitzgerald following the collision, and a permanent replacement, Cdr. The Navy also released a report detailing the harrowing moments immediately following the ship's collision .

Later, the driver of a gray sports auto plowed into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring 19 others.

"There have been reports that he was terminated", the company said, emphasizing that was false, along with accusations it employed racists. The Ohio resident, 20, has been accused of second-degree murder and other charges.

But "pretty much everyone's happy with the fact that he no longer works here", the employee said. (There is a third location in Oakland.) The chain, owned by Richard Rienmann, also posts essays from the Libertarian Ludwig von Mises Institute on a section of its website called "Propergander".

"Being an at-will employee means you could be fired just because your boss doesn't like you".

When asked by The Post if White would have been permitted to keep his job had he not resigned, the shop declined to comment further. It starts at Finnish Hall, 1970 Chestnut St., 7-7:30 p.m.; from 7:30 p.m.to 8 p.m. people will march from Finnish Hall up University Avenue to Civic Center Park; ending at 8 p.m. with a candlelight vigil and speakers in MLK Civic Center Park.

At first, it was believed that White was sacked because of his political beliefs, however, the restaurant is now saying he resigned. Berkeleyside included a photo of that poster, so it seemed unnecessary to not name White.
