Lionel Messi Cristiano Ronaldo lead sports stars in condemning Barcelona attack

The Real Madrid and Barcelona stars head the shortlist for the FIFA World Player of the Year.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham are all represented as well.

Andres Iniesta is one of the more surprising names on the 24-man shortlist for the Best FIFA Men's Player award for 2017.

Football's governing body will hold their awards gala on 23 October in London this year, where the eventual victor will be announced.

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is the favourite to lift the prestigious award after becoming the first manager to defend the UEFA Champions League title, and claiming the La Liga, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2016/17.

Dana Rohrabacher said Thursday he wants to brief President Donald Trump on his meeting with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange . The White House has not confirmed whether it was aware of the meeting ahead of time.

A list of 12 candidates for the award has been drawn up by a panel of Federation Internationale de Football Association legends, including Cafu, Diego Maradona, Carles Puyol and Jay-Jay Okocha, among others.

Also for the title of best coach of the year by FIFA expect Luis Enrique (ex Barcelona), Mauricio Pochettino (Tottenham), Diego Simeone (club atlético de Madrid) and Josep Guardiola (Manchester city).

The victor of the award, part of FIFA's The Best series of accolades, will be chosen by national team coaches, captains, selected media representatives and football fans. FIFA will announce the final lists of the three nominees for each of the four categories listed above – as well as for the FIFA Puskás Award, the FIFA Fan Award and the brand new The Best FIFA Goalkeeper award – later in September.

National Champions in the season 2016-2017 steel Massimiliano Allegri (Juventus), Carlo Ancelotti ("Bavaria"), Leonardo Jardim (Monaco) and Antonio Conte ("Chelsea").
